Federal Clean Water Act: Section 401
Section 401 of the Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that the discharge of dredged or fill material into water of the United States does not violate state water quality standards. Generally, no CWA Sec. 404 permits will be issued until the State has been notified and the applicant has obtained a certification of state water quality standards.
