Subject: G7-- list of biodiversity attributes --CONTROLLED VOCABULARY From: Gary Waggoner at NBS-TTC Date: 9/18/96 12:17 PM CONTROLLED VOCABULARY -- FYI Here are some biodiversity terms which come from the International Biodiversity Convention that should be part of a controlled vocabulary effort. Although the US has not ratified that convention, these are terms that will likely be defined and used by the international community in dealing with biodiversity. I'm pretty sure that the "standard thesauri" referred to are Info-Terra, the EEA Environmental Thesaurus and the FAO AGROVOC. Waggoner) Dear Joseph, here's a list which I compiled of attributes on biodiversity - the "catchwords" that frequently appear in the text of the biodiversity convention itself as well as in related papers. A lot of them do not appear in the "standard" thesauri. Although I've tried to group the terms in a certain logical order, this is by no means a complete and perfect list. I wonder if it suits our purposes to provide a crude terminological framework for biodiversity-related information. Maybe we could discuss this in our G7 Topic Working Group. One idea would be to incorporate it into one of the existing thesauri, e.g.the one Mark sent to you a short while ago. Here's the list: biodiversity/biological diversity components of biological diversity species diversity genetic diversity ecosystem diversity ecosystem habitat in-situ conservation protected areas management ecosystem protection ecosystem rehabilitation/restoration threatened species introduction of alien species community-based conservation conservation legislation ex-situ conservation gene banks germ plasm collections domesticated or cultivated species farmers' rights genetic material genetic resources access to genetic resources prior informed consent benefit sharing access legislation country of origin of genetic resources country providing genetic resources intellectual property rights patents sustainable use of biodiversity biodiversity prospecting biological resources biotechnology genetically modified organisms biosafety biodiversity monitoring biodiversity identification capacity building research and training public education awareness financial mechanisms technical and scientific cooperation exchange of information legislation research and development research cooperation biodiversity research impact assessment minimizing adverse impacts clearing-house mechanism access to technology transfer of technology (technology transfer) indigenous and local communities indigenous and local populations customary use of biological diversity indigenous and traditional technologies private sector national strategy national report Conference of the Parties (COP) Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) I'm looking forward to hearing your and the group's comments.
