The Pathways to Sustainability web site (now under construction) contains or will contain the following content:
Pathways to Sustainability is an emerging body of work aligned with the efforts of millions of people and hundreds of thousands of organizations worldwide to create a more equitable, just and sustainable future. This alignment is around a "constellation of values" that places human relationships, with each other and the environment, ahead of only financial and material rewards for the most privileged. These efforts are defining an alternative future to the financial globalization now decimating environments, nations and communities as it concentrates wealth and power. A "Transformational Movement" that will bring "Transformation in a Generation," not in every action, but in the fundamental ways human beings think and relate to each other is already well underway. The accelerating trajectory of human evolution will produce a rewarding, sustainable future IF nurtured by a healthy, supporting set of conditions, just as life in natural ecosystems thrives with the right conditions and dies out when they are removed. Science and technology are examples of human evolution, especially the Internet. As the primary tool of the Transformational Movement, it increasingly links individuals and organizations into networks and "meta-networks" through its growing capacity and power (future of the Internet). Beyond new products and services, there are other, more powerful, long-term indicators of evolution. These emerge as processes and relationships, for example, recognizing the innate equality of all human beings, evolving democratic movements worldwide in the last two decades of the 20th century, and better access to information to make decisions more open, transparent and accountable. These evolutionary processes pull our civilizations into a future we co-create based on our evolving consciousness. We believe it is not only possible but essential to achieve a balance of individual opportunity and the common good; environmental, economic and social relationships; current consumption and future needs; and all of the other elements of sustainability now being defined in "communities of place" and "communities of interest" worldwide. Over time, those aligned around this constellation of values will build the knowledge base, capacities, processes, strategies, tools, resources, policies, institutions and networks to support transformation and a thriving future of health, equity, prosperity and balance. While this constellation of values is not new, its central role in systems of governance and commerce will be. We hold this vision and intent along with millions of others. We invite you into our small part of this dynamic, creative, emerging human system of the future as you make your own contribution in your own community in your own way. As we each do so, we will become linked, directly and indirectly, through the consciousness we all share as human beings and through the power of the Internet, to communicate what we want, how we want to achieve it and what ethics, values, principles and relationships we choose to guide us along the way. We hope what we are doing will be of some help to you on your path to contribute to our common future. Lake Tahoe August, 2000 |
