Greenbelt Enhancement
Project Description
Description: Examine an undeveloped greenbelt parcel adjacent to the
school and identify park/community uses which could be developed there. Develop a plan for those uses, present the plan to the appropriate persons/organizations, and implement it. The teachers have received approximately $3,500 from a Learn and Serve grant to fund restoration and park feature development.
Instructional Goals of the Project:
- Students will develop a plan for the greenbelt which
involves examining community values to determine
needs; performing a site inventory to identify
appropriate species; and identifying local land use/
zoning controls.
- Students will determine the project; teachers will act
as facilitators to guide questions/answers to the
appropriate resource/community persons.
- Students will implement parts of the plan which
includes trash clean-up, elimination of non-native
species, and planting indigenous plants.
- Middle school students will use this area as a long-
term outdoor lab and act as docents for elementary
school children.
- Develop the project as a cross-curricular project
which involves at minimum English,geography, math, and science.
- Enhance community pride and belinging by creating a lasting structure that will beautify the environment and help fostr student self worth.
- Promote long-term volunteerism among youth.
- Become actively involved in identifying and proposing solutions to community problems.
Evaluation Technique: Student maps/plans and
successful field work. Others to be developed.
