Internet project
Tahoe Northern Sierra Nevada Internet Project
Summary: The Sierra Planning Organization (SPO) and the Tahoe Center for a Sustainable Future (TCSF) are creating a system of freely accessible government information (local laws, permits, meetings minutes, voting materials...) using personal computers, on-line geospatial data catalogs and the Internet. To ensure usage of the system SPO and TCSF are providing informative printed materials, workshop and follow up activities designed to develop Internet skill among regional agencies (federal, state, county, city) in the Northern Sierra Nevada and Tahoe region.
Objectives
- Any citizen in the northern Sierra Nevada of Tahoe area, with a computer and a modem, could dial one number and access government information for his or her local jurisdiction or any other agency participating in the network.
- Local, regional, state, and federal agencies would easily be able to exchange notices, bulletins, electronic mail or data with any of the other agencies on the network.
- Local government agencies would be able to cut costs by sharing geospacial data among their departments that use geographic information systems.
- Each participating agency or organization would determine the level of its participation, including the geospatial data it would make accessible to the network, the degree of sophistication of its equipment, and the immediacy of its data access.
- Participants in the network would provide a consistent user interface, and would use standards and protocols that would ensure ready and useful exchange of information among various types of computers, including UNIX-based, IBM-compatible, and Apple.
