| Most people who grew up on a citys edge are haunted by memories of natural places that are now gone, and Jim McKissock is no exception. While others lament whats lost, or resign themselves to inexorable change, however, he is deeply engaged in a personal mission: to discover what has survived and restore what he can rescue in and around El Cerrito, on the east shore of San Francisco Bay.
He works quietly, almost invisibly, without sponsors or appointment. While neighbors tend to their gardens he does that and morehe gardens the urban wilds, on his own time and initiative, occasionally assisted by a handful of volunteers.
