Agency: U.S Fish and Wildlife Service
Program: Jobs-In-The-Woods
Program Description: Program funds are intended to support the implementation of watershed restoration projects on non-federal lands within the range of the northern spotted owl while employing dislocated workers in timber dependent communities to conduct project work. Watershed restoration projects must be conducted on non-federal land. Successful applicants and landowners must be willing to maintain the restoration projects for a minimum of ten years. Projects must be part of a watershed analysis, assessment or other watershed ecosystem based evaluation for restoring watershed health. Projects must be designed to address one or more of the following program activities: Road Treatments and Improvements that Contribute to Decreased Sedimentation; Riparian Revegetation and Associated Upland Revegetation and Enhancement; and In-stream Restoration Improvements Accompanied by Riparian or Upland Restoration. Once completed, projects should be self-sustaining and require minimal maintenance. Projects must include a monitoring plan, or be a part of a larger public/private land watershed monitoring strategy for the project area. This program is part of a Watershed Restoration Program Request for Proposal issued by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the US Bureau of Reclamation.
Eligible Communities: Proposals will be accepted from areas within the range of the northern spotted owl in the following timber dependent counties: Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Trinity and selected portions of Siskiyou, Shasta, Glenn, Tehama, and Lake counties.
Funding Information: The US Fish and Wildlife Service contribution is usually not more than $100,000 per project.
Timelines: The most recent RFP was released in September 1998 with an application due date of October 16, 1998. The Review and Rank Committee will meet for the final review in December 1998. Proposals recommended by the Committee for funding will be forwarded to the appropriate agency for final selection and approval.
