Economic Recovery

Agency: USDA Forest Service

Program: Economic Recovery

Program Description: Provide planning, technical and financial assistance to communities that are economically distressed from dependency on forest related resources. Included are communities experiencing hardship due to loss of jobs and income derived from forestry, wood products industry or related commercial enterprises such as recreation and tourism in the National Forest.

Economic Recovery encourages communities to coordinate with public and private agencies and organizations to develop community action teams and comprehensive community action plans to promote economic improvement, industrial and business diversification and community revitalization.

Eligible Communities: Any town, township or municipality or similar unit of general purpose local government, or area represented by a federally recognized Native American Tribe, a not-for profit corporation or institution organized to promote broad based economic development, that has a population of 10,000 or less; is located within 100 miles of a national forest and is located within a county where at least 15% of the primary and secondary income is derived from forest related products or industries; or

Any county not classified as a Metropolitan Statistical Area that meets the proximity and economic dependency criteria.

Funding Information: Matching requirements limit federal contributions to no more than 80% of total project. Priority will be given to communities not eligible for Northwest Economic Adjustment funds. Economic Recovery funds and Rural Development Administration funds for planning assistance cannot be used within 5 years of one another.
