Mixed-evergreen Woodlands

Mixed-evergreen forests occur throughout coastal California, as well as inland, where the climate is generally drier and warmer. These communities consist of mixed species assemblages including conifers and hardwoods that from associations with neighboring plant communities such as coast redwood and Douglas-fir forests, coastal prairie, or even chaparral. Typical inhabitants include many species of maple (Acer) and oak (Quercus), as well as bay (Umbellularia). Red- and green-barked madrone, Arbutus menziesii, and giant chinquapin, Castanopsis chrysophylla, with its burr-covered nuts, are also commonly found growing with the coniferous forest species.
